Among the Not So Great

Twenty intimate pen-portraits of old sadhakas with whom the author was in close personal touch. These reminiscences, most of which were serialised over the years in Mother India, stretch back to events up to 60 years ago.

Each piece is accompanied by a photograph. The author in his inimitably witty and intimate style brings alive the spirit of utter devotion to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother that marked the early days of the Ashram.

The title, inspired by Dilip Kumar Roy's book 'Among the Great' suggests how the achievements of these figures may not have been "great" in the conventional sense. But the moments of joy their memories bring "is reason enough...to bring them back from the past".

These sketches reveal that true greatness lies in the deepest simplicity.
