Sitakant Mahapatra 1937 is a major force in modern Indian poetry. A recipient of several honour he has been a member of the central selection board of Bharatiya Janapith and executive board of the Sahitya Akademi. Presently he is a member of the Indian National commission for copperation with UNESCO. A doctor of philosophy in social anthropology he is an tribes of which he has translated and edited ten anthologies.
