It is primarily an introduction to image thinking and picture reading in Indian art and thought and it seeks to make the profound Hindu and Buddhist intuitions of the riddles of life and death recongnizable not merely as Oriental but as universal elements. The notes Indologist Heinrich Zimmer born in Germany in 1890 came to the United States in 1940 at the height of his career and was lecturing at Columbia University when he died in 1943. All these books were prepared for publication by Joseph Campbell author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces from extensive notes left by Heinrich Zimmer at the time of his premature death.
