The narrator resembles a character in A La recherche du temps perdu, who searches in the realm of darkness for his lost Eurydice. In greek mythology the wife of Orpheus - eurydice is killed by a serpent on her wedding night. When the poet gets to the confines of his journey, he turns his head to see if Eurydice was following, and she is instantly caught back into Hades. The present tale of a displayed person in the modern world is that of Orpheus and his twice-lost Eurydice. Hw loses both lands ---- the ine he flees from and the one he adopts.
