Grammar of Arabic Language |
|
|
On being elected to the chair of professor of Arabic in Hugli College, I found that the want of an Arabic elementary grammar was greatly felt by the Arabic students of the Calcutta University. Therefore, I compiled such a grammar as I thought was needed in the Urdu language and modeled it on the concise & simple plan of European grammars. Encouraged by the success of the above compilation I have been induced to publish an Arabic grammar in English, the language in which University Examinations... |

Pali Primer |
$4.99 $3.74 |
Temporarily Out of Stock |
The Pali Primer is a good introduction for non-academic Pali students. The pace is good, with lots of examples. It is light on the technical background of the language and so leaves the student with gaps in terms of morphology and some of the more obscure usages, so perhaps having Warder, or a full Pali grammar to refer to would be advantageous. I like Gair and Karunatillake as a reference as well. |

From Indus to Sanskrit (Vol I) |
$6.49 $4.87 |
|
This is the first real attempt to decipher the Indus script. In this first part, nearly twenty lines of the texts have been deciphered and interpreted after a full discussion about the type of the Indus language and its relation with Sanskrit. The Indus language belongs to the so called agglutinative type consisting mostly of monosyllabic words. After a stupendously long history of ups and downs, only faintly known to the Vedic seer Dirghatamas, it evolved as accented inflexional Sanskrit,... |

Semantics of Rig Veda |
$8.49 $6.37 |
Temporarily Out of Stock |
Syntax (or grammar) and Semantics are the two wings of a language. Syntax gives the set of rules to construct sentences which are legal in the language. Semantics is the study of the meanings of words and phrases. Every legal sentence need not be meaningful. For instance the sentence, 'the mantra-chant smashed a hill' is legally correct, but makes no sense. The Sanskrit of Veda mantras is substantially different from the classical Sanskrit. The grammar of the sanskrit of Veda mantras is... |

Sanskrit and the Evolution of Human Speech |
$9.49 $7.12 |

This book presents Sri Aurobindo's views on linguistics in general and on Sanskrit in particular. It compares Sri Aurobindo's approach to the problem of the origin of human speech with those of other philologists. Sri Aurobindo has extensively studied some of the word-families of Sanskrit to find out the original mind-impressions that the root-sounds have within them. Discovering these, he shows how Sanskrit has preserved the original primitive structure of language and the system of simple... |
