The Ranki Vas, "the Queen's Stepwell", at Patan, the mediaeval capital of Gujarat, was built in the last decades of the eleventh century by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her husband Bhimadeva I of the Caulukya dynasty. Measuring more than sixty-five metres in length, it is among the largest in Gujarat, and in terms of its sculptures which number about five hundred, surpasses all other examples. An attempt has here been made to understand the architecture, sculpture, iconography and chronology of Udayamati's stepwell with the help of twenty-six scale drawings and 211 photographs. This study will greatly interest the reader because it is indeed a pioneering work: at a stroke, a complete study of the most beautiful stepwell of India, recently desilted by the Archaeological Survey of India. The iconography and placement of the images as described meticulously by Dr. K. Mankodi is of special interest.
