The Account of the Kingdom of Nepaul by Colonel William J. Kirkpatrick is the original classic on Nepal and its people.

It contains the substance of observations made during a mission to that country in the year 1793 when the author was sent to Nepal by Lord Cornwallis to mediate in the dispute between China and Nepal. Originally written for the Government and Court of Directors of the East India Company, this work on Nepal was the first to be written in English and the only reference work on the country for many years.

Today I went through this book, whereas I earlier had read some pieces quoted in other writers' books on history of Nepal. An account by an eyewitness of 250 years old contexts, is really a fascinating one. The writer has made us grateful to him and the gratefulness will remain in the upcoming generation.
The History of Nepal was first written in English and the writer must be none other than Kirkpatrick. We have enough Bhojpatra, Tadpatra, Vamshwali, Shilalekh as a source of authentic history. but writing history of Nepal is still a incomplete job. Almost our histories lack description about peoples, rather they tend to write with buttering the rulers up for their vested interest.
I liked it, although it has own style of language and spelling which are considered wrong as per the modern grammatical rules.
