The creative work of Bhai Vir Singh comprises a large variety of literary genres-poetry, epic, fiction, disquisitional prose and drama, besides massive works of scholarship pertaining to the sacred literature of the Sikh faith. Out of this vast body of literature, it is planned to present in an English version a considerable selection from his lyrics, and reflective poems, alongwith connected extracts from his magnum opus in poetry, the spiritual epic entitled Rana Surat Singh. Translated extracts from these two facets of his poetry appear in two separate parts in this book. As to the literary characteristics of the work represented in these two parts and the aesthetic and philosophical experience expressed through it, comprehensive Introductions have been added.The present translation by two eminent scholars and writers--Professor Gurbachan Singh Talib and Professor Harbans Singh, embodies some rare traits: It possesses felicity of expression in the English language; it is distinguished in tone and literary quality and it captures the substance and flavour of the original. It is hoped that the present volume will be a precursor to similar other efforts in presenting more out of Bhai Vir singh's voluminous work to the world of scholarship no less than the general reading public.
