The root word of 'Islam' in Arabia connotes peace. The word for belief is 'Iman', which is derived from 'Amn', which also means peace. Then, while greeting on another, the Muslim says, 'Assalam-o-Alaikum', which means 'peace be upon you', to which the other replies in the same manner.
The opening verse of each chapter in the Holy Qur'an, describes the main attributes of Allah as Merciful and Compassionate, which is repeated at the start of every work. All these clearly and unambiguously underline the character of a Muslim and The Islamic society.
