Buddhist art was not created primarily for aesthetic considerations. Most of the works of art were devoted to the revealing of the divine personality of the Gods and Godesses. The book is an attempt to explore new images, new forms and new icons and also understand them in their proper time and space contexts - pan-Indian and regional as well as pre-pala scenario.
Dr Sudhakar Sharma is currently Secretary in the Lalit Kala Akademi, a premier institution of the government of India, concerned with promotiong and projecting Contemporary, Ancient, Tribal and Folk Art.Before joining the Lalit Kala Akademi, he served the National Gallery of Modern Art and the National Museum. He has also been the the recipient of the senior fellowship in the Visual Arts, awarded by the department of Culture, Govt. of India, in the year 2000-02.
