T.W. Rhys Davids |
Pali English Dictionary |
$63.99 $47.99 |
|
As the Pali Text Society began issuing editions and translations of the Pali Canon and Commentaries in quick succession, Rhys Davids conceived the idea of the compilation of an exhaustive dictionary of Pali, based on the voluminous basic material that was being brought to light.
The work took more than twenty years of devoted labour, but before his death in 1992, Rhys Davids had the satisfaction of seeing its first volume published. In four volumes, issued over 1921-24, the Dictionary... |

A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera |
English-Pali Dictionary |
$31.99 $23.99 |
|
Here is a reprint of the English-Pali Dictionary by A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera published long ago by the Pali Text Society in Roman script. This publication was then considered a notable event in the life of the Society, for it was a great improvement on a similar earlier work by Venerable W. Piyatissa whose usefulness was reduced for the English-speaking readers by the Pali words being given in Sinhalese script. This is a considerable enlarged form of a concise English-Pali Dictionary compiled... |

Pali Primer |

The Pali Primer is a good introduction for non-academic Pali students. The pace is good, with lots of examples. It is light on the technical background of the language and so leaves the student with gaps in terms of morphology and some of the more obscure usages, so perhaps having Warder, or a full Pali grammar to refer to would be advantageous. I like Gair and Karunatillake as a reference as well. |

ABOUT THE BOOK : In India recollection of previous lives is a common feature in the histories of the saints and heroes of sacred tradition. The doctrine of transmigration, since the later Vedic period, has played such an important part in the history of the national character and religious ideas that even buddhist literature has included the ages of the past as an authentic background to the founder's historical life as Gautama. Jataka stories or birth legends were widely known in the third... |
