J.S. Grewal is currently the Chairman of the Governing body of Indian Institute of advance study Shimla. Formerly he was the director at IIAS and was also professor of history and Vice Chancellor Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. He was recently awarded the Padma Shri. He has published extensively on historiography medieval and modern Indian history, Sikh movement and the Punjab.
