The present study contributes to an understanding of the aim of Tantric Puja, which is intentionally hidden from the common man,and about which many strange notions prevails both in India and the west. As an example of regular Tantric puja practice it presents, with an elaborate introduction and commentary, the Sanskrit text and English Translation of the second chapter of the Nityotsava. Itis one of the best Known and most respected works of the Srividya school of Hindu Tantrism, a school which is still alive today. The book presents illustrations of different acts of the puja rituals and the ritual gestures (mudra) employed in it. About the Author :Gudrun Buhnemann is a Professor at the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia of the University of Wiscosin-Madison. U.S.A. Her major publications include Budha-Kausika`s Ramaraksatotra : A Contribution to the Study of Sanskrit Devotional Poetry : A Study based on the Vidyarnavatantra ( Wichtrach : Institut fur Indologie,1989); and the Iconography of Hindu Tantric Deities, Volume 1 ; Thepantheon of the Mantramahodadhi. Volume II : The Pantheons of the Prapancasara and the Saradatilaka (Gorningen : Egbert Forsten, 2000-2001).
