Plants have been used by man from prehistoric times for relieving suffering and curing ailments. The folk medicines of almost all the countries of the world abound in medicinal plants and tribal people wherever they exist, rely chiefly on herbal medicine. Presently, Indian system of medicine uses over 1100 medicinal plants and most of them are collected from the wild regularly, of which over five dozen species are said to be in great demand.
